Heart Failure

General health information — not medical advice.

Talk to your doctor. This is general information. Your own doctor and care team know your situation best.

What to Know

Heart failure means the heart is not pumping as well as it should. It does not mean the heart has stopped.

Many people manage heart failure at home by following their treatment plan and watching for changes.

Daily self-checks

  • Weigh yourself every morning at the same time, after using the bathroom and before eating, and write it down.
  • Ask your doctor how much weight gain should prompt a call.
  • Check for new or worse swelling in your feet, ankles, legs, or belly.

Everyday habits that help

  • Take your medicines as prescribed, even when you feel well.
  • Follow the salt (sodium) and fluid guidance your care team gave you.
  • Balance activity with rest, and ask what kind of activity is right for you.

Call your doctor if you notice

  • Sudden weight gain or increased swelling.
  • More shortness of breath than usual, or needing more pillows to sleep.
  • A cough that will not go away, or feeling more tired than usual.

How Home Health Can Help

Talk to your doctor. This page is general health information only. It is not medical advice. It does not replace a visit with your doctor. Always follow your own doctor’s and care team’s instructions.

In an emergency, call 911. Do not use this website or email for urgent medical needs.
